The Virus that Triggers the Cervical Cancer also Attack Men

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) does not only strike women. Men can also carry HPV (carrier) and spread the virus to a partner. In some cases, certain types of HPV attacks the male genitalia.

But, as a result of the attacks that occurred HPV in men is as fierce as a woman. The disease is most widely suffered by men in his genital warts due to HPV (genital warts) in the form of chicken’s comb. Even this is only about 1 percent, based on research in the United States.

Men have less risk and likely no complaints. Men can be carriers of the virus and infect the female partner.

Professor Efren J. Domingo MD, Ph.D., an expert on cervical cancer from the Philippines revealed men can carry HPV and pass it. To prevent the spreading of the virus, the prevention at the primary stage is very important among them by education and abstinance, monogamy and the use of contraceptives. Prevention through vaccination makes the program more effective in preventing the spread of the HPV virus.

Prof. Domingo recommends that the vaccines against men and women performed before entering the sexually active age. In the 9-10 age through adolescence is recommended for vaccination. Vaccination for men make the prevention programs more effective, he said.

According to him, based on the research in the Philippines, 20 percent of adolescents aged 15 years in the Philippines become sexually active. This of course makes the risk of getting cancer is high for teens.

As for women and men who have entered the sexually active age who want to make HPV vaccination should examine whether the body keep the virus or not. After the screening and the results are negative, giving a vaccine would benefit, he said.
