'Got a call from two
ex-pro-level baseball coaches when my son was sitting the bench on a
local youth baseball team. They were the coaches for the League
All-Star team(best players from teams in the league were chosen for the
honor). They'd called to inform that Zack was chosen to be on the coveted ALL-STAR TEAM. I asked them how they came to choose my son because he wasn't a
starter--and only getting "spot-duty". They simply said, "...'don't
know why he ain't starting every game, because every time we've seen him
on the field, he's killed us." He was the fastest, by far...hit
well...stole bases-- Personally, I wasn't really a baseball fan--at the
time. 'Played football through college, so that was "my" love and understanding. Cut
to the chase: 'Didn't "accuse"--didn't yell "racism" "cronyism"... didn't
really do anything, except: CREATED THE "JOSH GIBSON BOMBERS BASEBALL
CLUB/TEAM"...with my son. Our "solution"? Our team/organization
sponsored a successful tournament that invited teams from up and down the West
Coast into Nevada. Winning Trophy went to a Reno, Nevada team--who's pitcher went on to play pro-ball. We also went from youth baseball to semi-pro...along
the way winning TWO San Francisco City CHAMPIONSHIPS. One...the highly regarded San Francisco PONY LEAGUE Championship. Two: Historic San Francisco SEMI-PROFESSIONAL LEAGUE Championship. 'Son
went on to play in college but only for freshman year--which I believe
spoke to his enjoyment of challenging the status quo by CREATING OUR
OWN... and SUCCEEDING big time...even more than "baseball". He's now near end of medical school... AW 6-6-22 |
